NikpV Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 certainly could be impellor off the water pump shaft! don't think the pump is expensive though (not sure re fitting) Quote
Smilge Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 I would agree with Nik on this one ....... the other thing to check is the radiator as it might be partially blocked. The way to check this is to feel the back of the radiator when the engine is cold and then starting it. As the engine warms up you are feeling for hold and cold spots. IIRC, as I havent done this for over 20 years, a cold spot indicates a blockage. It should feel slightly hotter at the bottom than the top but even throughout its width. BEWARE though ..... DO NOT FEEL IT WHEN THE ENGINE IS UP TO OPERATING TEMPERATURE ..... it will burn you. Quote
davewill Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 If it is your water pump, say goodbye to around Quote
latrine Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 I agree, it's almost certainly the impellar on the water pump - new water pump i'm afraid Mine went last year but i was due a cam belt change as well so had both jobs done together price wasn't too horific actually as labour costs dramtically saved by having both jobs done at the same time I think the pump is about Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 could be a faulty thermostat, check the rad for cold spots then check the the stat Quote
Dave-G Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 A frequent occurence during or following a freezing spell when a car had no anti-freeze is a ... damaged impeller. The engine gets cranked which turns the pump - but ice around the impeller prevents the blades from rotating so they snap off. Could this have become noticeable everytime you have stressed your engine since we had minus temperatures? Quote
